ASR - “Concrete Cancer”

What is Alkali - Silica Reaction?

Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) other wise known as “concrete cancer” has stemmed from the chemical reaction between alkali hydroxides in cement and reactive silica found in some aggregates. When moisture come in contact with the reactive aggerate, a gel forms and continues to swell. This leads to severe structural damage, fracturing the concrete and allowing more moisture to enter. Over time, this weakens the concrete, jeopardizing the entire integrity of the pool.

Preventing ASR: What can you do?

The best way to fight ASR is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Ensuring strict adherence to proper construction techniques and using the best materials. It is equally as important to work with a pool builder who understands what causes ASR and knows the proactive steps to take to prevent ASR. Here at Engineered Pool we follow these steps on every pool to protect against concrete cancer:

  • We work exclusively with concrete suppliers who can provide an engineered certified mix proving they test the aggregates for reactivity and who purchase aggregate from outside of Austin.

  • incorporate supplementary cementitious materials - such as fly ash, slag and silica fume. These help lower the overall alkalinity of the concrete. These materials not only help prevent ASR but also enhance the strength and durability of concrete.

  • Ensure proper waterproofing. Apply a waterproof coating and sealant to create a barrier between the water and the concrete.

identifying and diagnosing ASR

Identifying the signs of concrete cancer:

if you see any of the signs below it is important to contact your pool builder. The most common signs to look out for are:

  • Cracking: “map” cracking is the most common symptom to find.

  • Leaks: keep an eye out for white build- up around any cracks. This can be a gel-like substance that indicates that moisture as begun to seep into the concrete.

  • Spalling: chunks of concrete flaking or breaking off

  • Rust Stains: this could be due to the corroded rebar that as been compromised in the concrete.

Diagnosing and steps to remediate ASR:

If ASR is suspected the only way to get confirmation is to send off core samples of the affected pool and have an engineering company analyze the samples. If your pool does have a positive ASR report, the best thing to do is a complete demolition and rebuild. Doing a complete rebuild will guarantee the longevity and safety of your swimming pool. Here is what you will need to do if you suspect your pool does have ASR:

  • Reach out to your pool builder. They can assist you with any insurance claims or further actions needed.

  • Contact a Professional you trust. When it comes to rebuilding your pool make sure you go with a company who is well educated about ASR and knows what steps need to be followed to insure this never happens to you again.

  • Prepare to rebuild. The best way to move forward with an ASR pool is to start over. Engineered Pools is here for you and will talk you through the process of rebuilding. We are committed to giving our clients their dream backyard and peace of mind back!
